Whatever type(s) of potatoes (Latin name is Solanum tuberosum) you plan to grow, it will involve the majority of the steps listed below. Each of the steps below has a link to a separate page which describes exactly what needs to be done and when is the correct time to do it.

There are two key points to consider when selecting potato varieties. Do you choose an early variety (first and second earlies) which will be ready for harvest early or do you choose a maincrop variety which will be ready for harvest later in the year.
Having made that decision you need to choose a particular early or maincrop variety which suits your requirements (disease resistance, taste, reliability, size etc.).
